Show Me The Money!

I want to show you why it makes financial sense to bring me in to train your developers. My Code Coach Talks, Workshops and custom coaching will save you money—lots of it.

Here is a short, back-of-the-envelope Investment Return Analysis for one of my two-hour training talks:

Many Benefits — My training has numerous benefits for your organisation: Increased developer motivation, improved architectural skill, fewer bugs in the future, to name a few. For simplicity, I will only count cost savings from the avoidance of bugs in the analysis.

How Much Does A Bug Cost? — We could reasonably assume the average bug costs one hour of developer time, conservatively priced at $50, and one hour of QA tester time, also priced at $50—so around $100 to fix the usual defect.

Costly Bugs — Certainly, some bugs can be fixed faster and require little or no manual testing. However, lucky bug fixes are few and far between and many defects are tricky beasts often discovered by the customer, and your team must record, triage, fix, build, deploy and test them. This kind of effort can waste several man-days and cost $1,000s.

Talk — My talks have no attendance limit but let’s say only 10 developers attended. During each talk I like to present at least 10 ideas on better coding.

The Value — If just 1 or 2 of those 10 ideas are remembered by each programmer thus avoiding 1 bug per day, no let’s be more conservative, say 1 bug per week, then this will translate to 10 bugs avoided per week — a cost savings of $1,000 per week. We assumed each bug costs on average $100.

Breakeven Point — If a talk costs $2,000 (less when bought in bulk) then you’ll start saving money with your improved software delivery team after only 2 weeks, or 10 working days at a rate of $1,000 per week!

Conservative Figures — I believe the figures presented in this cost analysis are rather conservative. It would be reasonable to modify some assumptions, resulting in a payback period that sits comfortably within 1 to 3 days!

The Gift That Keeps On Giving — What about the accumulated benefit from a Code Coach talk? $1,000 per week over one year accrues to close to $50,000 in savings from a $2,000 investment! ROI of 2,500%! A clear winner.
